FAQ: When are we to build/set up or sukkah/sukkot?

We are to dwell in Sukkot for all seven days of the feast. Those in the dispersion who are not part of a larger group may set up their tents on the first day of the feast.
However, some ask if it is possible to set up their sukkah before the feast?

The answer is yes. Judah recommends putting up the sukkah any time after Yom Kippur. Judah also says the sukkah should be established at the very latest the day before the first (high) day, because there are many activities and reading on the high day, and time is needed for this.

So, if you are meeting as part of a group, it makes more sense to establish the sukkah at least the day before. (This especially makes sense if you were to dwell in Beit Lechem (as Yosef and Miriam did) and have to walk back and forth to Jerusalem. You would want your sukkah set up ahead of time.
