Becca Biderman: SHATTERED Barley in Migdala
“Shattered Barley in Migdala” is a short video describing the inspection results of a barley field located near Migdala, Israel, as inspected on 19 March 2021 by barley inspector Becca Biderman.
On 19 March 2021, some 16 days before the Karaite Wave Sheaf Offering date, sister Becca Biderman inspected a barley field near Migdala, Israel. Much of the barley was already shattered and on the ground. Much was too brittle to harvest. Other barley (the second flush) was still immature.
The result of this inspection shows that there is no possibility that this barley can wait for the Karaite Wave Sheaf Offering on 04 April 2021 (as the first flush is already lost). And how, had the Wave Sheaf been offered on the Nazarene date of February 28th, 2021, the barley could have been harvested as it came ripe.
Becca Biderman barley inspection: 19 March 2021
Location: Migdala israel, behind Dabach store
Inspection date: 19 March 2021
Timing of Yom HaNafat HaOmer
Nazarene Israel Yom HaNafat HaOmer
Held on 28 February 2021
Becca Biderman’s Migdala barley field inspection is 20 days AFTER Nazarene Israel Yom HaNafat HaOmer.
Karaite/Sadduccee Yom HaNafat HaOmer
Held on 4 April 2021
Becca Biderman’s Migdala barley field inspection is 16 days BEFORE the Karaite/Sadducee Yom HaNafat HaOmer.
Becca Biderman’s Migdala inspection
- The Migdala field was 2 weeks behind the early field in poriyah Illit (the field by Becca’s house).
- These fields are not uniform.
- Much of the field is still green [second flush], yet the first flush [the firstfruits, earliest crop] is already shattered [lost, fallen on the ground] on 19 March 2021 (16 days prior to the Karaite/Sadduccee date for Yom HaNafat HaOmer on 4 April 2021.)
- Crop loss would have been avoided by holding Yom HaNafat HaOmer on 28 February 2021 (the Nazarene Israel 2021 date for Yom HaNafat HaOmer).
Becca Biderman comments
- “It is a vert difficult thing to be able to find an area that does not suffer from being cut, just in this month of their Pesach calendar…. Frequently, if it is going to get cut, it gets cut right here at their Passover.”
- “We are going to look at what is left. We are going to see that everything is just really very past being ripe… The heads are really brittle and falling apart.”
- “There is lots of barley that the heads are dropping out of.”
- “This field was maybe two weeks behind that field by my house [Becca Biderman’s house in Poriyah Illit]. I am seeing all kinds of barley here that is already beginning to shatter.”
- “There is just so much barley that is shattering.”
Barley inspection conclusion
- The date of 19 March 2021 (when Becca Biderman’s inspection took place) is already too late to offer the omer, because a lot of the barley is already on the ground!
- The Yom HaNafat HaOmer date of 4 April 2021 is too late to offer the firstfruits of aviv barley.
- If the Omer had been offered on 28 February 2021 (the Nazarene Israel 2021 date for Yom HaNafat HaOmer), this would have prevented the loss, or the need to violate Deuteronomy 16:9 (as the Karaites suggest doing).
Karaite/Sadducee result
- By declaring Rosh HaShanah late (and therefore holding Yom HaNafat HaOmer late), the farmers are forced to cut their crops prior to Yom HaNafat HaOmer (in violation of Deuteronomy 16:9), or to lose much of their crop as it over ripens, shatters, and falls to the ground.
- The Karaite doctrine offers a much drier, over-ripe omer to be offered on Yom HaNafat HaOmer, rather than offering the firstfruits as commanded in Scripture.
Scripture and Torah commandments
Deuteronomy 16:9
Devarim (Deuteronomy) chapter 16 verse 9 commands to begin the count from Yom HaNafat HaOmer to Shavuot from the time we ‘begin to cut’ the grain. The Karaite doctrine teaches that it is okay to begin cutting the barley prior to Yom HaNafat HaOmer, waiting to begin the fifty day count later at the date of their Yom HaNafat HaOmer. This is in violation of Devarim 16:9.
Devarim (Deuteronomy) 16:9
9 “You shall count seven weeks for yourself; begin to count the seven weeks from the time you begin to put the sickle to the grain.
Leviticus 2:14-15: “Firstfruits”
Vayiqra (Leviticus) chapter 2 verses 14 through 15 tells us what grain to bring to Yahweh. We are told to bring an offering of “firstfruits”. And that these firstfruits would be “green heads of grain”. We also see that these firstfruits are to be in a ‘parchable’ stage and/or crushed carmel. The Karaite doctrine does not bring Yahweh the ‘firstfruits’ of green heads of grain. Instead, they bring a dry, brittle offering from within the harvest. This is in violation of Vayiqra 2:14-15.
Vayiqra (Leviticus) 2:14-15
14 “Also when you bring an offering of firstfruits [בִּכּוּרִים] to Yahweh, you shall bring green heads of grain [אָבִיב קָלוּי] parched in the fire, [and/or] crushed carmel [גֶּרֶשׂ כַּרְמֶל] shall you offer for your firstfruits offering.
15 And you shall put oil on it, and lay frankincense on it. It is a grain offering.”OT:1061 bikkuwr (bik-koor’); from OT:1069; the first-fruits of the crop:
KJV – first fruit (-ripe [figuratively]), hasty fruit.OT:1069 bakar (baw-kar’); a primitive root; properly, to burst the womb, i.e. (causatively) bear or make early fruit (of woman or tree); also (as denominative from OT:1061) to give the birthright:
KJV – make firstborn, be firstling, bring forth first child (new fruit).OT:24 ‘abiyb (aw-beeb’); from an unused root (meaning to be tender); green, i.e. a young ear of grain; hence, the name of the month Abib or Nisan:
