“The Two Types of Prophecy” is segment 7 of the video series Spirituality and Heart Matters. In this video, we are going to talk about the importance of hearing Yahweh’s voice in relation to the two different types of prophecy. And we will also see how, while one of these two types of prophecy is rare, the other type should be a daily part of every Renewed Covenant believer’s walk.
If you have not yet seen the last segment on the vital importance of Hearing Yahweh’s Voice, we encourage you to check out that study first. Because to understand the two types of prophecy, it is important to understand what it means to hear Yahweh’s voice, and why hearing Yahweh’s voice is important for every Renewed Covenant believer. We explain in that study that, one of the reasons it is so important to hear Yahweh’s voice is because ‘learning to obey His voice’ was one of the very first things Yahweh commanded Israel to do upon leaving Egypt. And we certainly cannot obey Yahweh’s voice if we cannot even hear it.
Shemote (Exodus) 19:5
5 “Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine.”
Many people wonder what it means to hear Yahweh’s voice. We explain all these things in the last segment.
The gift of prophecy
We will begin this segment by explaining what the gift of prophecy is. We will explain that, while not everyone has been given the gift of prophecy, we are told to pursue this spiritual gifting. We will talk about how we should seek such a gift, what obstacles hold us back, and examples from Scripture.
Qoritim Aleph (1 Corinthians) 14:1
1 Pursue love, and desire the spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.
Yochanan Aleph (1 John) 2:16
16 For all that is in the world- the lust of our flesh, the lust of our eyes, and our pride [egotism] of life- is not of the Father but is of the world.
What is prophecy?
We will talk about the definition of prophecy, what that means for each Renewed Covenant believer, and how, according to Strong’s Hebrew Concordance, there are two types of prophecy.
Strong’s Hebrew Concordance
OT:5012 naba’ (נָבָא); a primitive root; to prophesy, i.e. speak (or sing) by inspiration [NBW: breathing] (in prediction or simple discourse):
What are the two types of prophecy?
1. A prediction (foretelling)- A very special gift that comes from Yahweh.
2. Discourse (forthtelling)- A common gift that anyone of us can develope, if we take the discipline to do so.
First type of prophecy
The first of the two types of prophecy is known as foretelling, or a prediction. This is a special gift that Yahweh only gives when He has a message to give to His people, Israel.
Second type of prophecy
The second of the two types of prophecy is known as forthtelling, or simple discourse. It is a common gifting that we should all ask Yahweh for and take the discipline to develope. Forthtelling is when we focus on Yeshua, we abide in Yeshua (in the vine), and we are connected to Yahweh through Yeshua. So that we are listening for His voice and speak according to it.
While the first of the two types of prophecy (foretelling) requires prediction, the second type of prophecy (forthtelling) simple requires us to listen in the Spirit, remain in Yeshua, and speak according to the Spirit.
The two types of prophecy: examples from Scripture
We will cover various examples of the two types of prophecy from Scripture. And by the end of this video, we hope that you will be able to identify the two types of prophecy, understand the purpose of both types of prophecy, and seek Yahweh our Elohim for the gift of hearing His voice and speaking according to it.
