Parashat Shemote

Shemot, Shemoth, or Shemos (שְׁמוֹת‎—Hebrew for “names”).

The Parashat Shemote, the first portion of the Book of Exodus in the Torah, recounts the oppression of the Israelites in Egypt and the birth of Moshe (Moses). As Pharaoh fears the growing Hebrew population, he orders the killing of all Hebrew male infants. Moshe, however, is saved and raised in Pharaoh's household. After witnessing an Egyptian taskmaster mistreating a Hebrew, Moshe flees to Midian, where he encounters Elohim at the burning bush. Yahweh instructs Moshe to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. Initially reluctant, Moshe eventually accepts his divine mission. The Parasha sets the stage for the Exodus, highlighting themes of divine intervention, liberation, and the beginning of the Israelites' journey to the Promised Land.
