1 March 5785 / 2025, new moon, feasts of the first month, biblical feasts, 13th Hebrew month

Nazarene Israel News 1 March 5785 / 2025 lists current praise reports, prayer requests, and projects. This week’s edition shares important updates on the stage of barley in the land of Israel and the new moon report, the Torah Calendar, Rosh HaShanah, and the feasts of the first month.

Shabbat shalom, Nazarene Israelites.

1 Upcoming Feasts, New moons, Calendar news: 1 March 5785 / 2025

a 13th Hebrew month begins 1 March 2025 (at evening)

The new moon was witnessed from Israel on the evening of 1 March 2025. We are not able to declare Rosh HaShanah at the sighting of this new moon. (Explanation below.) Therefore, evening 1 March 2025 marks the beginning of a 13th Hebrew month. Witnesses to the new moon sighting include:

17:41 – Poriyah Ilit, Becca Biderman
17:48 – Zevulun valley, northern Israel.
Also reported from Jerusalem.

b Rosh HaShanah/feasts of the first month 2025 scenarios

As of 1 March 2025, barley witness Becca Biderman reports that there is some wild barley in the land Israel that is in the early stages of fruiting, but that it is NOT aviv barley, as there is NO food substance in the head (i.e., no water or starch). (For the detailed explanation of what constitutes aviv barley, please see the studies listed in ‘Calendar studies’ below.)

Further, the weather is forecasted to be warm, and if the weather continues to be warm this barley might become aviv (medium dough) in time for a Wave Sheaf Offering on 16 March 2025. And it may in fact become aviv–but even if it does, this will not change our ruling.

Our understanding is that the month of the Aviv must be announced when the new month is announced, because in ancient times it would take time for the word to spread, and for the people to prepare, and make the pilgrimage up to Jerusalem in time. However, all of this hinges on a presentable omer (wave sheaf).
To hold Yom HaNafat HaOmer you must have a presentable wave sheaf–and after much prayer and listening, we conclude that there is no way for us to be 100% certain that a wave sheaf offering will be ready to present to Yahweh by 16 March 2025. For this reason, Nazarene Israel is declaring a 13th Hebrew month, and we will now continue to watch barley reports in expectation of scenario #2, below.
It may be that the existing patch of barley is found to be aviv on or before 16 March, but since the determination must be made with the announcement of the moon, Nazarene Israel is declaring a 13th month for all Nazarene Israelites.

We encourage you to check out our calendar studies, which explain how to observe the calendar correctly, and avoid common errors. A full list of studies can be found in section 3d below for convenience. We also encourage you to track our calendar updates on our Torah Calendar News page.

And just as a brief note, some ministries are declaring that you must be able to substantiallybring in the harvest” before you can declare the month of the Aviv. To see why this is completely wrong (and is damaging to the farmers), please check out our study, “Let’s Not Break Deuteronomy 16:9!”

c. Rosh HaShanah (expected): 30 March 2025 (evening)

The next new moon is expected to be visible from Israel on 30 March 2025. We expect this to be Rosh HaShanah (or the start of the Hebrew Year). Confirmation will be made upon the sighting of the new moon (or the 30-day default count) and the barley in the land of Israel.

Please stay attentive to Torah Calendar News for updates concerning new moons, barley reports, Rosh HaShanah confirmation, and feasts for the coming Hebrew year.

d. Why the Firstfruits Torah Calendar?

Every year we receive questions about the Firstfruits Torah calendar and why it differs from Karaite, Jewish, and Messianic, and Equinox calendars. The different calendars that exist can (and do) cause a lot of confusion. But if we follow Scripture without adding or taking away from Yahweh’s word, we see that there are significant errors in the Karaite, Jewish, Messianic, and Equinox calendars.

We explain these errors in the following studies, as well as why it is important to follow the true Firstfruits Torah calendar in order to observe Yahweh’s feasts at His appointed times only.

Note: Some published studies may include dates for Babylonian calendars (5785/2025). It should be noted that neither the Hillel II Jewish calendar, nor the Roman-Greco calendar are the biblical Torah calendar of Yahweh, and that NI only updates these years for publishing and relational purposes. While the Babylonian years change accordingly, NI keeps the biblical Rosh HaShanah (new year) according to the Torah Calendar.

2a. Barley and Wave Sheaf Offering:
Currently, Becca Biderman of Ancient Path New Moon is the only barley inspector who seems to understand what a proper wave sheaf is (and why you should not let the true Firstfruits fall to the ground, so you can take your “first” fruits offering from the middle of the harvest, as other groups do). She documents her work, and it seems accurate as far as we can tell. There are several other (Amalekite) barley groups whose work we cannot recommend in any way. They ignore Deuteronomy 16:9, they define “Firstfruits” as a random sheaf from the middle of the harvest, and they add rules and definitions that Yahweh does not add. They are seemingly always a month (or sometimes two months) late. While several groups sight the first crescent sliver of the new moon well, as far as we can tell, only sister Becca Biderman publishes accurate barley reports.
Even more details:
As we explain in our studies (see list below), there only needs to be enough aviv barley ready for the omer (wave sheaf) Firstfruits offering by either the 15th or the 21st day of the first month. As explained in these studies, it is a disaster if we declare Rosh HaShanah too late, because it would force farmers in the land of Israel who have the earliest ripening barley to do one of two things:
A) Either they must break Devarim (Deuteronomy) 16:9 and begin harvesting their crop BEFORE the Firstfruits offering has been presented unto Yahweh for the nation. Or
B) Lose all or part of their barley crop, while they wait an extra month for the leaders to declare Rosh HaShanah!By declaring the true Firstfruits unto Yahweh Elohim as He commands, and keeping His appointed days according to His perfect timing, the farmers do not need to lose their crops; neither are they encouraged to break any of Yahweh’s commandments. For more on declaring Rosh HaShanah, please see section 3b (below) for the studies on aviv barley and the Torah calendar. 2b. Need to Begin the Year with the True FIRST Fruits of Barley!
We always receive inquiries about why NI observes the Hebrew months at different times from the other calendars (such as the calendars taught by the Messianics and the Sadducees / Karaites).
There are several reasons, but the main reason is that we begin the calendar year with the (true) Firstfruits of barley.
In contrast, other groups take a sheaf from the main harvest, and falsely CALL them the “first” fruits (when they are more like the MAIN fruits.)
Because of this, the Messianics and the Karaites will usually be a month (or even two) late.
